The tale’s dark conclusion hints at something that Michael Egnor warns of here at Mind Matters News: If the world ceases to believe in free will, the problem is not that there is no guilt but that there is no innocence. One hitch is that the futurist punishment portrayed in “Limbo” assumes that the person who is punished by having to experience what the victim experienced would regard the experience in the same way as the victim (or the victim’s loved ones) did. The chilling premise of “Limbo” would make for an interesting discussion. The sci-fi element unfolds gradually, at a pace that enables the story to remain real. The ambience is very good, particularly the integration of a sci-fi premise with a real-world post-tragedy setting. If we are to examine how the basic premise plays out in the characters’ lives, it may be better to hear it up front. Otherwise, too much of our cognitive effort goes into trying to guess the basic scenario from the dialogue and setting. Precisely because the scriptwriter does not have 2.5 hours in which to work in all that context, it may be wise to just tell us some information up front. One problem with many sci-fi shorts is that they don’t provide the viewer with enough background to really understand the story. Review: The extended synopsis, quoted above, was a wise decision.
